She had some chances to work on her craft earlier this month, when Snail Mail did a short East Coast tour. Jordan’s stage persona is still developing, too. Snail Mail already has influential supporters: Habit was was recorded and produced by Jason Sauvage of Coup Sauvage & The Snips and G.J. musicians who started young in the punk and indie-rock scenes and stuck with it. Each step forward gets her closer to joining a rich history of D.C. Jordan anticipates a full-length album coming pretty soon. “In a way I almost feel like it’s easier just because I don’t have to actually have real responsibility while trying to balance it,” she says. Jordan says there are advantages to being so young while trying to develop as an artist. Ray Brown and Alex Bass, respectively, have succeeded Durham and Vieria. For Habit, she was joined on drums by Shawn Durham, whom she met at a Beach House show in 8th grade, and Ryan Vieria on bass. The band is mostly a solo thing - Jordan writes all the songs. “He had all these bugs in boxes and stuff that he keeps in his basement and was talking about his creepy life as an entomologist and I just don’t want that for myself.” “I really wanna say no because this, like, creepy dude came into my forensics class the other day - he was like a forensic anthropologist - and he made me so uncomfortable,” Jordan says. ![]() There’s probably no biology career in store for Jordan. They’re also kind of literal at times - the EP’s penultimate track, “Snail,” is actually about the terrestrial mollusk. Jordan says the songs on Habit are largely about love - and one person in particular, although she won’t specify who - as well as trying to figure herself out. to go to shows and stuff and she’s not really too overbearing or anything,” Jordan says. “It’s kinda weird because I have a really cool mom - I drive my car to D.C. Being so young and yet being a regular at local shows has required some flexibility at home. Jordan is just 17, and she still has one more year left at her high school in Ellicott City, Maryland. ![]() Snail Mail didn’t have much of a public profile until October 2015, when it played Baltimore’s U+N Fest, but it already has a debut EP, Habit ( listen below), released this month on Sister Polygon Records. “We were originally called ‘Snail Male,’ like m-a-l-e, but we realized that was kinda dumb and didn’t really make any sense, so we just changed it to the regular spelling.” “I think I just really like snails, and then that just rhymes,” says Lindsey Jordan, the band’s singer, guitarist and guiding force. Snail Mail’s sound may draw from a decades-old tradition of low-fi rock, but don’t assume the band’s name expresses yearning for a simpler time - it has nothing to do with the United States Postal Service. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Some other studies, however, argue that intralingual subtitles are superior than interlingual ones in facilitating content comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and second language production. For instance, Vulchanova et al (2015) claim that both intra and interlingual subtitles (in the language of the soundtrack, or the listener’s native language, respectively) result in improved plot comprehension and vocabulary learning. Even in these studies, there is controversy regarding the consequences of the different subtitling conditions and the relation to the listener’s proficiency. Several previous studies have argued that subtitles in audiovisuals can facilitate other aspects of second language learning such as vocabulary acquisition, or overall plot comprehension. Can viewers learn by linking phonological to lexical information while watching subtitled media in a second language? And, if so, what are the most favourable subtitling conditions? Surprisingly, the effects of subtitles in improving perception of second language phonology have received little attention. Subtitles provide just-in-time written lexical information that can help disambiguate and parse phonemic information, eventually facilitating the acquisition and/or fine tuning of difficult foreign phonemic categories. This re-tuning is especially important to understanding how we learn to distinguish phonemes in foreign languages and adapt to their allophonic variations. Indeed, it has been proposed that listeners can shift their native phonetic category boundaries in a flexible way in order to adapt to phonemic variations based on context. The same way people can recognise a familiar face from different angles and lighting conditions, a listener must be able to extract and understand lexical items despite great variability in word form, depending on the acoustic conditions or the speaker’s voice and accent. One of the problems with acquiring L2 phonology is phonetic variability. This is attributed to the fact that native language perceptual categories are established early in life and are difficult to retune afterwards. Often learners have more success learning foreign vocabulary, orthography and syntax than phonology, both in terms of production and understanding. Regarding phonology, the process of learning the sound categories of a second language (L2) as an adult can be a rather challenging task. This study aims to investigate the potential benefits of watching subtitled media in major aspects of second language learning such as phonology and vocabulary. ![]() In many European countries TV shows and other media content are broadcasted in their original version with subtitles (Sweden, Belgium, Denmark or the Netherlands), and even in countries such as Germany, France or Spain where films and foreign media content are regularly dubbed, subtitled audiovisuals in English are becoming increasingly popular because access to audiovisual media in its original language with subtitles is easy. In fact, the education experts and the public media have mixed opinions about the feasibility of learning languages through watching films with subtitles. Nevertheless, this widespread claim in society lacks conclusive scientific evidence. English is the world’s most widely learnt foreign language hence the potential of learning through watching subtitled media can have a great economic and social impact (see for commercial applications of this principle). It is often claimed that watching subtitled films and series implicitly helps learning a second language. These learning effects with just 1 hour exposure might have major implications with longer exposure times. Finally, as one could expect, plot comprehension was best under native, Spanish subtitles. The vocabulary test showed no reliable differences between subtitled conditions. The results of the listening skills tests revealed that after watching the English subtitled version, participants improved these skills significantly more than after watching the Spanish subtitled or no-subtitles versions. Before and after the viewing, participants took a listening and vocabulary test to evaluate their speech perception and vocabulary acquisition in English, plus a final plot comprehension test. In order to test the potential learning effects derived from watching subtitled media, a group of intermediate Spanish students of English as a foreign language watched a 1h-long episode of a TV drama in its original English version, with English, Spanish or no subtitles overlaid. One reason for this trend is the assumption that perceptual learning of the sounds of a foreign language, English, will improve perception skills in non-English speakers. Watching English-spoken films with subtitles is becoming increasingly popular throughout the world. ![]() ![]() ![]() I drew these directly in pen to remove the temptation of erasing and redrawing them until they looked good to me. Benchmarks show that the sustained data transfer rates are higher for FireWire than for USB 2.0, but lower than USB 3.0. Many users preferred it over the more common USB 2.0 for its then greater effective speed and power distribution capabilities. The system was commonly used to connect data storage devices and DV (digital video) cameras, but was also popular in industrial systems for machine vision and professional audio systems. This port is sometimes labeled S100 or S400 to indicate speed in Mbit/s. This style was later added into the 1394a amendment. Sony's implementation of the system, i.LINK, used a smaller connector with only four signal conductors, omitting the two conductors that provide power for devices in favor of a separate power connector. A separate adapter is required to use it with Thunderbolt 3. Apple still sells a Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter, which provides one FireWire 800 port. Apple's last products with FireWire, the Thunderbolt Display and 2012 13-inch MacBook Pro, were discontinued in 2016. By 2014, Thunderbolt had become a standard feature across Apple's entire line of computers (later with the exception of the 12-inch MacBook introduced in 2015, which featured only a sole USB-C port) effectively becoming the spiritual successor to FireWire in the Apple ecosystem. Apple released its last computers with FireWire in 2012. However, in February 2011 Apple introduced the first commercially available computer with Thunderbolt. Īpple first included onboard FireWire in some of its 1999 Macintosh models (though it had been a build-to-order option on some models since 1997), and most Apple Macintosh computers manufactured in the years 2000 through 2011 included FireWire ports. On June 12, 2008, all these amendments as well as errata and some technical updates were incorporated into a superseding standard, IEEE Std. ![]() In 2007, IEEE 1394 was a composite of four documents: the original IEEE Std. FireWire is a serial bus, meaning that information is transferred one bit at a time. IEEE 1394 is a serial bus architecture for high-speed data transfer. Its development was initiated by Apple in 1986, and developed by the IEEE P1394 Working Group, largely driven by contributions from Sony (102 patents), Apple (58 patents), and Panasonic (46 patents), in addition to contributions made by engineers from Philips, LG Electronics, Toshiba, Hitachi, Canon, INMOS/SGS Thomson (now STMicroelectronics), and Texas Instruments. ![]() ![]() The PS3 Slim was officially released on September 1, 2009, in North America and Europe and on September 3, 2009, in Japan, Australia and New Zealand. As of October 2011, PS2 classics are available for purchase in the PlayStation Store. Support for emulation to play PS2 titles is not present in the Slim version, however, shortly after the release of the PS3 Slim, Sony announced a new series of PS2 remasters called Classics HD as in PS2 and PSP titles remastered in HD for the PS3 with Trophies and sometimes PlayStation Move compatibility added. The PS3 Slim no longer has the "main power" switch like the previous PS3 models, similar to redesigned slimline PlayStation 2. The PS3 slim also includes support for CEC (more commonly referred to by its manufacturer brandings of BraviaSync, VIERA Link, EasyLink etc.) which allows control of the console over HDMI by using the TV's remote control. The RSX moved to a 40 nm process in the latest revision. The Cell microprocessor has moved to a 45 nm manufacturing process, which lets it run cooler and quieter than previous models, and the cooling system has been redesigned. ![]() The redesigned version of the PlayStation 3 (commonly referred to as the "PS3 Slim" and officially branded "PS3") features an upgradeable 120 GB, 160 GB, 250 GB or 320 GB hard drive and is 33% smaller, 36% lighter and consumes 34% (CECH-20xx) or 45% (CECH-21xx) less power than the previous model, or one third of the original PS3 model. This feature is absent in the Super Slim model This change lowers the power consumption of the console and makes it less expensive to produce. It was rumored that the Cell processors in the third-generation PS3s (40 GB, 2008 80 GB (CECHL, CECHM, CECHK) and 160 GB) would move from a 90 nm process to the newer 65 nm process, which SCEI CEO Kaz Hirai later confirmed, and later to 45 nm. ![]() Nevertheless, as the model features four USB 2.0 ports, wireless networking and flash memory card support can already be obtained through the use of widely available external USB adapters and third-party PS3-specific media hubs. As of September 2009, Sony had placed no further emphasis on these proposed add-ons. No official Wi-Fi or flash memory card readers were ever released by Sony for the 20 GB system, although Sony had plans to do so. This was due to the removal of "Graphics Synthesizer" GPU, which stripped the units of all PlayStation 2 based hardware. The 40 GB, 80 GB (CECHL, CECHM, and CECHK) and 160 GB models have two USB ports instead of the four USB ports on other models and do not include multiple flash card readers, SACD support, or backward compatibility with PlayStation 2 games. Due to the elimination of the "Emotion Engine" and its replacement with a software-emulated version, the level of PlayStation 2 compatibility was slightly reduced. However, it retains the "Graphics Synthesizer" GPU resulting in a hybrid hardware and software emulation. The European 60GB model (CECHC), the South Korean and North American CECHE 80GB model excludes the PlayStation 2 " Emotion Engine" CPU chip with it being replaced by an emulated version via the Cell Broadband Engine. In terms of hardware, the 80 GB model CECHE released in South Korea is identical to the 60 GB model CECHC released in the PAL regions, except for the difference in hard drive size. In addition to all of the features of the 20 GB model, the 60 GB model has internal IEEE 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, multiple flash card readers (SD/MultiMedia Card, CompactFlash Type I/Type II, Microdrive, Memory Stick/PRO/Duo) and a chrome colored trim. All models, excluding the 20 GB model, include 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi. Compatibility issues with games for both systems are detailed in a public database hosted by the manufacturer. The original and CECHExx models were also the only video game consoles ever made to feature a Super Audio CD player.Īll models support software emulation of the original PlayStation, but support for PlayStation 2 backward compatibility diminished with later compatible models and the last model to have integrated backward compatibility was the NTSC 80 GB (CECHE) Metal Gear Solid 4 Bundle. All retail packages include one or two Sixaxis controllers or a DualShock 3 controller (beginning J ), one Type-A to Mini-B USB cable (for connecting the controller and PlayStation Portable to the system), one composite video/stereo audio output cable, one Ethernet cable (20, 60 and CECHExx 80 GB only) and one power cable. The only difference in the appearance of the first five models was the color of the trim, number of USB ports, the presence or absence of a door (which covers the flash card readers on equipped models) and some minor changes to the air vents. Although referred to by their HDD size, the capabilities of the consoles vary by region and release date. In less severe cases, heart murmurs can appear from exercise or fever, when blood flows through the valves faster than normal.ĭr. They can also happen when blood flows through a narrowed or stiff heart valve which restricts the blood flow, a process called stenosis. Heart murmurs occur when a valve does not close tightly and blood leaks backward, a process known as regurgitation. The heart valves close for the other half of the heartbeat to prevent regurgitation. Blood passes through valves during half of a heartbeat, flowing in one direction from one chamber of the heart to the next. Heart valves are necessary to control the direction of blood flow. While often times harmless, some heart murmurs may indicate underlying heart problems, including valve calcification, endocarditis, cardiac shunts, or septal defects. This is caused by turbulent blood flow through the heart valves or near the heart. ![]() A heart murmur is a blowing, wooshing, or rasping sound heard during a heartbeat. Meredith realizes there must be an underlying problem as indicated by not just these observations, but also by a heart murmur. These episodes are caused by a rapid drop in the amount of oxygen in the blood. Tet spells, which are most common in young infants two to four months old, are episodes of deep blue skin, nails, and lips appearing after crying or feeding, or when agitated. While admiring the babies, Meredith notices one of the babies crying intensely as his face turns blue, and quickly identifies a tet spell. To relieve some stress from the housemate search, Meredith and George decide to go to the Pediatrics floor to look at newborn babies. Except, instead of scrolling through people’s posts on the UCSD Class of 2022 Facebook page, Meredith tries looking for the perfect housemates at work. “The First Cut is the Deepest” begins with Meredith looking for housemates- giving me flashbacks of trying to find my roommates when entering college. Please don’t attack me for spilling too much tea. ![]() I’m stoked to finally have a good excuse to rewatch Grey’s Anatomy for probably the seventh time instead of doing homework, and to share my love for this legendary show.Īlso, spoilers are fair game in these articles. In hopes of giving Shonda Rhimes the praise she deserves for creating such a masterpiece, in this blog series I will be examining the show’s medical, social and often times relatable topics. Miranda "The Nazi" Bailey, tells Burke what a jackass he really is - in less than 10 seconds! So, how does this rank in the end? Well, it's above "good", that's for sure, but still not quite "highly recommendable".BY JENNY CHIEM | BLOGGER | SQ ONLINE (2018-19)Īre you really even a pre-med student if you haven’t repeatedly binge-watched Grey’s Anatomy? It seems that almost every person you meet on campus is aspiring to be the next Meredith Grey- to be honest I can’t blame them, she’s a surgical goddess. Not that he's alone in the scene-stealing: Oh, playing the most interesting of the interns, has a ball squaring off with Chambers, who injects his role with a "bad boy" charisma that makes up for any lack of depth, and Chandra Wilson is simply unmissable when her character, Dr. Shepherd's remarks to the rapist near the end of the episode are likely to raise a sincere smile, thanks to Patrick Dempsey's faultless charm, a weapon he employs repeatedly, especially in the doc's hilarious attempts to seduce Meredith. ![]() The penis storyline provides several laughs, most of which are quite cheap - a clear sign of how badly that kind of comedy matches with a medical drama. As for Meredith, she is stuck with the dullest job of all: looking after the severed penis of a rapist, whose victim is struggling to survive in the O.R., until the police arrive. Burke's (Isaiah Washington) discovery of the fact he might not become chief of surgery once the boss retires, Cristina (Sandra Oh) being forced to work with the unbearable Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and Izzie (Katherine Heigl) taking care of a Chinese woman who can't afford proper medication (one of the few truly moving moments of the season). Among the highlights of the episode we have Dr. In the second show, series creator Shonda Rimes seems to have understood the supporting characters are much better and sidelines the heroine, while still, unfortunately, feeding her chunks of nearly indigestible narration. The pilot episode was watchable but occasionally irritating for its Meredith-centric script. ![]() |
